Minneapolis Fire Foundation Wraps Up Successful Decontamination Bucket Initiative

Minneapolis, MN-  The Minneapolis Fire Foundation proudly announced the completion of its Decontamination Bucket Initiative, a program designed to enhance the safety and health of local firefighters. The initiative, which launched earlier this year, aimed to provide decontamination buckets to every fire rig in the Minneapolis Fire Department, ensuring that firefighters have the tools necessary to reduce epxposure to hazardous materials and carcinogens.

Each bucket is stocked with essential cleaning supplies, including specialized soaps, brushes, and protective gear. The initiative also includes training for firefighters on effective decontamination practices to maximize the benefits of the new resources.

“This initiative marks a significant step forward in our commitment to firefighter safety,” said Foundation Director Steve Shapira. “By equipping our firefighters with these decontamination tools, we are not only improving their health but also extending their careers and service to our community.”

The successful completion of the program comes after months of fundraising, community support, and collaboration with local businesses. Singled out for their dedication to the initiative was 24 Restore and Raplor Roofing for their generous donations of time, energy and essential funding .   The initiative has been praised for its proactive approach in addressing the long-term health risks faced by firefighters.

Minneapolis Fire Chief Bryan Tyner expressed his gratitude, stating, “The Decontamination Bucket Initiative will make a tangible difference in our operations and help protect those who put their lives on the line every day.”

The Minneapolis Fire Foundation continues to seek ways to support and enhance the well-being of the city’s first responders through various initiatives and community partnerships.

The Decontamination Bucket Building Event was a HUGE success. Our first event took place on May 29, 2024 and brought together community members, volunteers, and firefighters to assemble decontamination buckets that are crucial for the health and safety of our firefighters. When used post-fire, gross decontamination eliminates 85% of the carcinogenic products from a firefighters gear.  That leads to 85% less carcinogens in the fire apparatus, which lead to 85% less in the stations. Check out the footage from 5 Eyewitness /KSTP news to see our community in action, supporting our brave firefighters!
